[Commlist] Fully funded ESRC General PhD studentships 2021 and South West and Wales AHRC PhD Studentships - JOMEC, Cardiff University, UK

We are currently inviting applications for two fully funded PhD schemes,
both of which are now open to applicants not only in the UK but also
internationally.
Studentship/Scholarship Awards commence in October 2021.
These two sources of funding are:
1) ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (Wales) - General PhD Studentship
(fees, stipend, research support fund) (deadline 3 February 2021);
2) AHRC South West and Wales (SWWP) PhD Studentships (fees, stipend,
etc) (deadline 25th January 2021)
Background:
The School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) has a long-standing
reputation as a world-leading centre for innovative teaching and research.
The School’s researchers engage with pressing contemporary issues and
debates across journalism, media and culture bringing together theory
and practice. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework assessment,
JOMEC’s research was ranked 2nd in the UK in terms of its quality and
impact.
Cutting-edge research is shared through regular seminars featuring JOMEC
colleagues as well as scholars from around the UK and internationally.
JOMEC also hosts the renowned biennial ‘Future of Journalism’ conference
bringing together scholars and practitioners from around the world.
These activities, and more, contribute to a lively and thriving research
environment.
JOMEC’s purpose-built, state of the art facilities at Two Central Square
situate the School at the centre of local and national media, including
BBC Cymru/Wales whose brand-new headquarters is situated next door. Our
location facilitates the building of strong industry links, boosting
students’ employability by providing access to major media organisations
within the important and growing sector of the creative and cultural
industries.

Details of funding:
1) ESRC DTP PhD General Studentship
ESRC studentships are highly competitive. Candidates should hold a 1st
or strong upper 2nd class degree; applications from those holding a
relevant research training at the Masters level will be considered for a
+3 award; the award is open to home and international (including EU and
EEA) students. Successful international student applicants will receive
a fully-funded Wales DTP studentship and will not be charged the fees
difference between the UK and international rate.
Applications are welcome for full and part-time study as either ‘1+3’
(i.e., one full time year of research training Masters followed by three
years of full-time Doctoral study, or the part-time equivalent), or ‘+3’
(i.e. three years of full-time doctoral study or its part-time
equivalent), depending on the needs of the applicant.
A completed application form for admission to doctoral study at Cardiff
University must be submitted by the deadline of 12.00 noon, 3 February
2021. Incomplete applications or those received after this time will not
be accepted.

The application must contain the following:
1. Covering letter addressed to Dr Cynthia Carter, no more than two
pages. Set out your reasons and motivation for applying; understanding
and expectations of doctoral study; academic interests, particularly of
those relating to your proposed research. Please specify whether you
wish to apply on a +3 or 1+3 basis.
2. Academic / Professional Qualifications including proof of English
Language Competency (7.5 IELTS minimum).
3. References: Two academic references. Candidates must approach
referees and include references with their application.
4. Curriculum Vitae: No longer than two pages.
5. Research Proposal: Up to a maximum of 1000 words, not including
bibliographic references. Use the following five headings in your proposal:
· Title, aims and purpose of the research;
· Brief overview of the relevant academic literature;
· Proposed design/methods;
· Academic contributions of your research.
· Bibliographic References

2). AHRC funding (South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership 2)
Cardiff is part of a consortium of 10 universities that form the South,
West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership. The application process
for the next round of funding for general projects via SWW-DTP2 is now
open with an application deadline of 12.59 p.m. on Monday 25 January
