[ecrea] PhD Scholarships in Journalism Studies at Swansea University

Fri Nov 09 19:55:36 GMT 2018

**PhD Studentships in Journalism Studies at Swansea University

Swansea University’s Media and Communications Department invites applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship that will commence in October 2019.  The scholarship is supported by Swansea University’s Research Excellence Scholarships Scheme (SURES).

The Department of Media and Communication seek research proposals from applicants with a keen interest in alternative journalism/ communication platforms and how they might reach beyond the values and imperatives associated with fourth estate journalism.  Key questions and topics in this area might include:

*How are contemporary alternative communication platforms positioned within the wider mediated public sphere?

*What communication strategies do these platforms use to engage their audiences? (These strategies might include satire, opinion, emotion, official discourse, multimodal content and so on)

*How do these strategies compare with those used by mainstream media, bearing in mind the prevailing regulatory framework within which they operate? (For example, how do they compare in terms of partisanship/impartiality and objectivity?)

*How do these strategies relate to audience reception, and what reactions do they generate? (This might relate to civic agency, cynicism and political echo chambers)

A more detailed description of potential project topics can be found here: https://www.swansea.ac.uk/politics/researchinpoliticsandinternationalstudies/politicalanalysisandgovernance/postgraduateresearch/suresscholarships/

Subject to eligibility criteria, SURES scholarships cover the cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (to be confirmed for 2019/20) for three years.  There will also be up to £1000 per annum available to support immersive training experiences, engagement with industry, international collaborative opportunities and cohort building).  Due to funding restrictions, the scholarships are available to UK/EU students only. Applicants liable for overseas fees are not eligible to apply.

How to Apply

Applicants will have to complete a 2000 research proposal. Please visit https://www.swansea.ac.uk/postgraduate/scholarships/research/swansea-university-research-excellence-scholarships-phd-2019.php for more details on the application requirements and submission process.

The supervisors of this proposed project, Dr Richard Thomas and Dr Allaina Kilby are happy to work closely with eligible applicants to develop their proposal in advance of the application deadline on the 4th of January 2019.  Please contact us should you have any queries.
