Assistant Professor, Critical Media Studies
About the University
WWU enrolls about 15,000 students (undergraduate and master's level) and
has a faculty of approximately 500 members (please visit the WWU website
for more information: www.wwu.edu). The university is located on scenic
Bellingham Bay and is approximately 45 miles south of Vancouver, British
Columbia, and 90 miles north of Seattle. The region is rich is cultural
events, and attractions as well as many recreational activities.
About the Department
The mission of the Communication Department at WWU is to teach
communication that nurtures inclusive civil discourse and encourages
cooperative solutions in a diverse world. The Department currently has
7 full-time and additional part-time faculty serving approximately 150
undergraduate majors. We seek a critical scholar of Media Studies who
combines a focus on digital media with an inter-sectional approach to
Latina/Latino/Latinx studies. Applicants must also be qualified to
teach at least one of the following required classes: our introductory
survey of Communication Theory, our Research Methods in Communication
course, or our capstone Communication Ethics seminar.
About the Position
The successful candidate will teach existing courses at the
undergraduate level, including some combination of Advocacy through
Media, Introduction to Media Studies, Issues in Media Studies,
Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, Communication Theory,
Research Methods, and/or Communication Ethics, as well as other classes
as needed. The teaching load is six courses per academic year. Members
of the Communication Department actively engage in research that
enhances effective instruction and expands the knowledge base and
creative vitality of the discipline. In addition, active service to the
department, the College, the University, the profession, and the
community is an important component of a faculty member's role at WWU.
Required Qualifications
Evidence of successful undergraduate teaching of Media Studies
Demonstrated commitment to an active and successful program of
scholarship
Ph.D. - Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in
Communication no later than the 15th of June 2019
Critical Media Studies scholar
Focus on digital media (cable, streaming media, social media)
An inter-sectional approach to Latina/Latino/Latinx studies
Ability to teach our introductory survey of Communication Theory,
our Research Methods in Communication course, or our capstone
Communication Ethics seminar
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of students and
faculty
Preferred Qualifications
Evidence of commitment to university and/or community service
