Aberystwyth University's AberDoc PhD scholarship scheme offers a package 
of research and training for full-time PhD students. These awards are 
tailored to enable students to develop the necessary skills required to 
meet their career choices and offer a breadth of development 
opportunities to enhance their research, teaching and transferable 
skills.The competition for these prestigious AberDoc scholarships is now 
open to students who wish to study for a full-time PhD commencing in 
September 2017.

*Deadlines:*The Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies’ 
submission deadline for the 2016 competition is *27th January 2017*.

*Applying for a Scholarship*

The application to study for a PhD must be received by the closing date. 
There are no additional forms for applicants to complete for this 
competition. Decisions will be based on the application to study for a 
PhD. Applications must include an application form, two academic 
references, academic transcripts and a research proposal (1000 to 1500 
words). Applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Kate Egan, Departmental

The results will be announced during the first week of May. Selection 
for the above awards will be based on the application for admission,

The department has over thirty experienced, research-active PhD 
supervisors, able to supervise projects in both the English and Welsh 
Medium across theatre and drama, scenography, performance studies, media 
and communication, film and television, and spanning historical and 
archival work, textual analysis, audience and reception research, policy 
research and practice as research. We offer supervision and research 
training in both English and Welsh, with a focus on topics such as:

Film stardom and performance; Film audience and reception research (with 
specialisms in children as audiences, audience memory studies, and local 
cinemagoing studies); the role of sound and music in cinema; semiotics 
and advertising; minority/minoritised language media; press, cinema and 
broadcasting history and policy; content regulation of television, and 
film censorship (national and local); documentary film and television; 
British and American television drama; Horror and Cult Cinema; Russian 
Cinema and Theatre; Classical Hollywood Cinema; British cinema and 
television (including Welsh cinema and television).

As well as the National Library of Wales (which is home to the Arts 
Council of Wales Archives, the Brith Gof archives, the National Sound 
and Screen Archive of Wales, and the ITV Wales Film and Video archive), 
the department also has a strong working relationship with Aberystwyth 
Arts Centre, which runs a range of important theatre and performance 
events and film festivals.The department is also a partner in the 
University's Centre for Media History (with the Departments of History 
and Welsh History), and the Politics and Performance International 
Research Centre (with the Department of International Politics).
