As a pioneer in the field of journalism education since 1970, we offer an intellectually stimulating research environment with an international reputation for research excellence.

//

Our overarching Phd/MPhil programme of Journalism Studies <http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/research/programmes/programme/journalism-studies> covers all projects that we supervise within any of the fields of journalism, media and cultural studies.

We particularly invite applications for PhD projects that fall within one or more of our five research groups <http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/journalism-media-cultural-studies/research/centres-and-groups>. However, we will also consider applications for projects that do not fit entirely within these parameters.

Our five research groups are:

  * Digital Media and Society
  * Journalism and Democracy
  * Media, Culture and Creativity
  * Communication and Human Security
  * Science, Health and the Media

As a postgraduate research student, you will have the opportunity to make an indelible mark on academia surrounding global media and journalism issues.

We are committed to helping you reach your fullest potential with the assistance of our expert research supervisors and the incredible academic, technical and personal support provided by our experienced staff.

Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, supported by the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales (Wales DTP), invites applications for PhD study, with the possibility of being awarded a fully-funded ESRC DTP Studentship, available to start in October 2017.

There is potential for up to three doctoral studentship awards (although this number is not guaranteed) in the area of Journalism and Democracy.

These studentships are ‘open’ awards. Applicants should consider approaching a potential supervisor before submitting their application to confirm that there is appropriate supervisory capacity within the University and to discuss their draft application.

Information on the research interests of our staff can be found on the School webpages <http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/journalism-media-cultural-studies/research>. A short description of the Journalism and Democracy pathway is available on the ESRC Wales DTP <http://www.walesdtc.ac.uk/pathway/journalism-and-democracy/> website.
