Postdoctoral fellow position in social media


At the Department of information science and media studies there is vacant position as postdoctoral fellow for four years. The successful candidate will be working in the academic context of the Digital Social Science Core Facility (DIGSSCORE) at the University of Bergen. We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to strengthen the research in social media usage related to political participation and civic engagement. Academic development work, including cross-disciplinary collaborations and method development will be a major part of the position.



DIGSSCORE is a new digital infrastructure, which has received a sizable five-year grant from the Bergen Research Foundation and the University of Bergen. It comprises the research-purpose internet- panel established at the University of Bergen in 2012 (the Norwegian Citizen Panel) and a fully equipped on-site social science computer lab (the Citizen Lab) to be established in 2016.



The Department of information science and media studies has collaborated with the Norwegian Citizen Panel since the start, and wants to strengthen the cooperation through this postdoctoral fellow position. The successful applicant will have the Department as the main workplace, but will also be part of the academic team of researchers and other fellows at DIGSSCORE.

The department of information science and media studies is an interdisciplinary institution for research and teaching within ICT and media studies. The department has a young and internationally oriented research environment and is part of several major research council funded project, i.e. within media use, journalism, computer games and search technology. Research at the department is organized in research groups, and the postdoctoral fellow is expected to take an active part in a research group. The department also has a multidisciplinary methods forum as an important academic meeting place.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

* The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within information science, media studies or other relevant fields, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  *   Experience from research on social media will be an advantage
* Be interested in scientific methods and cross-disciplinary cooperation * Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  *   Proficiency in both written and oral English



Potential candidates may be invited to the department for an interview, and might be asked to hold a trial lecture in a given topic.



About the position of postdoctoral fellow:

The position of postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is four years. The mandatory work in the position (25%) will mainly be related to work at DIGSSCORE and development work within teaching of research methods in the social sciences. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral fellow at the same institution.



Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work. The project proposal must be prepared in cooperation with the project manager/supervisor and must also include a schedule. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.



We can offer:

  *   A good and professionally challenging working environment.

* Salary at pay grade 57 (Code 1352/Pay range 24, alternative 1) in the state salary scale. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 483 700,- Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.

  *   Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
