UBC School of Journalism – Lecturer position
The University of British Columbia School of Journalism invites
applications for a Lecturer position to complement the School’s core
strengths in digital, international, environment and public policy
journalism as listed on its website: http://journalism.ubc.ca/. This
limited-term position is expected to be for two years, with an
anticipated start date of July 1, 2016. The Lecturer appointment will
be processed for an initial 12-month period, with renewal for one more
year, subject to excellence in performance. The School offers
concentrations in key areas of journalism, as well as academic
specializations across disciplines. Candidates should demonstrate
achievement of, or potential for, excellence in teaching in an
integrated, collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide high quality
journalism instruction, with a focus on digital storytelling formats and
multimedia stories. Candidates should be prepared to teach students how
to use digital tools for research, reporting, storytelling and audience
engagement. A full-time 12-month Lecturer is expected to be responsible
for 24 teaching credits (i.e., normally eight 3-credit courses) and
related service duties that may include some administrative
responsibilities normally undertaken by regular faculty members. It is
expected that teaching assignments will be distributed across the
12-month period of appointment to include scheduling in the summer
session, if possible. In some situations, a 3-credit teaching reduction
may be granted where additional administrative responsibilities are
assigned by the Director. Normal duties include those related to the
design and teaching of university-level credit courses, including
preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration
and marking of assignments and final portfolios; calculation and
submission of grades; graduate student supervision; and holding regular
office hours. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Master of
Journalism and in the Bachelor of Media Studies (BMS) programs. These
high quality professionally oriented programs engage innovative and
creative teaching practices and offer the chance to work with
outstanding students. The Lecturer may also be assigned
responsibilities in connection with the School’s offering in the
Vancouver Summer Program.
The ideal candidate will:
• have professional experience of working in a newsroom as a reporter
and/or editor, together with strong professional experience in producing
stories for multiple platforms
• possess university-level experience in teaching multimedia journalism
theory and practice
• exhibit strong digital journalism skills, including knowledge of
digital content management systems such as Wordpress, mobile and
multimedia production, and approaches to audience engagement
• demonstrate a commitment to a student-centred approach to teaching
through inquiry-based and cooperative learning
• have proven experience of working collaboratively in a team in an
open, experiential learning environment
• have capacity to innovate in technology-enriched and community-engaged
educational settings
• demonstrate ability to function effectively in a university environment
A Master’s degree in Journalism, mass communications, or a related
discipline is preferred; however, applicants with a Bachelor’s degree
plus exceptional professional and teaching skills may also be considered.
This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. The anticipated start
date for this position is July 1, 2016.
