[ecrea] Job Posting in New Zealand

Tue May 24 12:42:10 GMT 2016

Please find details below for a production-focused full-time on-going lecturer position in Wellington, New Zealand

Applications are invited for a permanent Lectureship/Senior Lectureship specialising in digital media production within the Media Studies and Expressive Arts programmes at Massey University, Wellington Campus. The level of appointment will depend on qualifications and experience.

Digital media production involves the making of screen media texts, the study of the ways in which they construct and convey meaning, and of the social, cultural and political contexts of media production and reception. The School is looking for an appointee who can take a leadership role in the teaching of two or more of the following areas: media production (including specialisations in videography, sound, editing, and post-production, among others), feminist approaches to media studies and media production, media script-writing, trans-media narrative, documentary, and creative communication.

The successful candidate will teach and research with broadcast quality recording equipment and a well-resourced computer lab, and will be expected to manage these facilities with some technical assistance. The School is currently undertaking a review of its teaching programmes and the successful applicant will also be expected to take an active role in this process.

The School of English and Media Studies has a strong record in teaching excellence and pastoral care in an interactive learning environment. Digital media production is situated within both the Media Studies and Expressive Arts majors/minors for the Bachelor of Communication. The Media Studies major also includes undergraduate courses which focus on studies of gender and race, media industries, social media, film, television, popular culture, and advertising. An ability to contribute to these areas, and particularly to the first-year introduction to Media Studies course, will be an advantage.

The Expressive Arts major is a cross-disciplinary programme comprising digital media production, creative writing, and theatre arts and performance studies. The ability to engage across these disciplines, and in particular to contribute to the foundation paper 139.133 Creative Communication, are also desirable.

The successful candidate may also be expected to teach media practice at graduate level, and to undertake supervision of students engaging in creative media research.

The School teaches courses in internal and distance learning modes (including online delivery), at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At the Wellington campus, most of the teaching is delivered to internal students enrolled in Communication qualifications which are cross-disciplinary in nature, involving a mixture of Business and Humanities subjects.

The successful candidate will have an advanced qualification – preferably a completed PhD, but consideration will also be given to candidates with a completed MFA (or equivalent) who have relevant teaching and production experience. University teaching experience and academic publication or other evidence of on-going research activity, including creative work, will be expected.

The start time for this position is negotiable, but we would like to have the appointee in place as early as possible, and no later than 1 February 2017. Enquiries of an Academic nature about the position should be directed to Mrs Carol Seelye, School of English and Media Studies, ph 64-6-951-7549, or (c.a.seelye /at/ massey.ac.nz) <mailto:(c.a.seelye /at/ massey.ac.nz)>
