AHRC 'Northern Bridge' Awards

Queen’s University, Belfast is part of the AHRC ‘Northern Bridge’ Consortium with Durham and Newcastle Universities. In 2014-15 there are approximately 50 doctoral awards available in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. This is an open competition with no quotas for subjects or Universities, and awards will be made on a competitive basis across the three Universities. For further information, see the Consortium Website. The duration of awards is three years for full-time and six years for part-time students. Awards comprise a full tuition fee waiver, a maintenance grant set at the AHRC’s national rate and access to a Research Training Support Grant administered centrally by the Consortium. Students should familiarise themselves with the AHRC’s terms and conditions for award-holders.
Eligible students (UK/EU) who wish to study in the School of English must apply to the School via Queen’s Online Portal (https://dap.qub.ac.uk/portal/user/u_login.php).

If you wish to be considered for AHRC funding, you must quote the code AH13 on your application in the relevant box. There are two sections of the form, A and B. Students should complete section A themselves. Section B should be completed in collaboration with a member of academic staff. This section includes your research proposal (max. 750 words). If you are intending to apply for AHRC funding, it is imperative that you contact a member of staff in your subject area as soon as possible. If you are unsure of who to contact, please get in touch with Dr Adrian Streete in the first instance.
In addition to the online application form, students are asked to submit the following:
Current CV
Two references
Transcript of previous qualifications
Letter of support from collaborative partner (only if applicable)
Portfolio of Work (Creative Writing Students only)

The deadline for applications is: 5pm, Monday 17th February, 2014. Please note that applications received after this date cannot be considered.

After applications have been submitted, there are a number of stages comprising ranking, nomination, and selection. First, applications will be considered by a sub-panel of School Postgraduate Committee. They will then be ranked by a Subject Scrutiny Panel (one for English Literature, chaired by Dr Adrian Streete and one for English Language, chaired by Dr Joan Rahilly). The Panels will nominate a list of candidates who will then go forward to a committee of Consortium Academic Directors who consider candidates from all Subject Scrutiny Panels. A final shortlist then goes forward to the ‘Northern Bridge’ Consortium Studentship Committee. Here, applicants from all three Universities across all eligible subject areas will be considered.

Successful applicants will be informed of the outcome by the Consortium on Tuesday 15th April, 2014.
