Assistant professor of Performance Design
 University of Roskilde

The Department of Communication, Business, and Information Technologies is hereby announcing a 3-year position as assistant professor of Performance Design, beginning September 1 2011.

Your responsibilities will include research, teaching, and supervision in the field of performance design (see description below). We are interested in applications in all areas of the field and have particular interest in humanistic and social science methods of analyzing and developing events and experiences, preferably in a business and media perspective. Applicants can have a background in cultural studies or another research area focused on contemporary culture.

We are searching for an assistant professor with the skills to contribute significantly to the development of research and teaching in the area. Moreover, we expect you to participate actively in the daily activities of the department.

You will be part of a research environment characterized by interdisciplinarity, openness, and diversity at both the levels of method and theory. Upon agreement at the hire, you will be associated with the research group 'Visual culture and Performance Design.'

We expect you to
-         conduct innovative research at an international level
- teach and supervise in the area of performance design at both bachelor and master levels, and also in the general studies department of the humanities and/or the general studies department of humanistic technology
-         have documented research qualification at the Ph.D. level
- be able to within two years of appointment to teach, supervise, and administrate in Danish language.

As an assistant professor you will have to take the pedagogical training courses for assistant professors at the University of Roskilde, which emphasizes project work in student groups.

The appointment follows the agreement between the Department of Business and the Academic Union.

The Department of Communication, Business, and Information Technologies (CBIT) is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment combining natural science, social science, technical science, and human science. CBIT conducts research, education, and communication in communication, journalism, performance design, business studies, computer science and informatics. Performance Design was established at the University of Roskilde in 2004 and is one of the department's three master programs with a communication degree. The program currently has 280 students and eighth faculty members. Performance design is an emerging program focusing on theories and methods for the study of production and consumption of events and experience from both creative and commercial perspectives. The field of inquiry includes festivals, conferences, media events or experimental communication where questions of sensory presence, collective participation, and experience of the event are central and where the production is continuously developed in relation to social changes and audience segments. Advanced knowledge and skills are required to analyze and coordinate projects involving many project partners and audiences. Moreover, the event and the performance can be viewed as a context for understanding questions of cultural production, experience, and consumption.
