This vacancy for a junior researcher is part of a 
joint research project of the Department of 
Communication Studies of the Vrije Universiteit 
Brussel and the Department of Applied linguistics 
of the Erasmushogeschool Brussel. This project 
focusses on the articulation of journalistic 
identities in the mainstream press (in relation 
to war coverage, multicultural conflict coverage 
and crime coverage). The methods used are a 
combination of discourse-theoretical analysis and discourse analysis.

For this research project a full-time researcher 
will be hired for 30 months, using the VUB 
PhD-scholarship system ("doctoraatsbursaal").

Requirements are:

- to have a MA degree in Communication and/or 
Media Studies, with a clear interest in 
linguistics; or a MA degree in (Applied) 
Linguistics with a clear interest in 
Communication and/or Media Studies; or a MA 
degree in a related social sciences or humanities 
discipline with a clear interest in (Applied) 
Linguistics and Communication and/or Media 
Studies. Candidates need to have completed there MA before 1 October 2008.
- to qualify for the VUB PhD-scholarship system ("doctoraatsbeurs")(*)
- to have obtained one or more distinctions during BA and/or MA studies

The readiness to initiate a PhD on this topic, 
and experience with qualitative research methods, 
discourse theory and journalism studies are recommended.

teachning assistent. A Masters degree is a requirement.

Deze vacature kadert binnen een onderzoeksproject 
van de vakgroep Communicatiewetenschappen van de 
Vrije Universiteit Brussel en het departement 
Toegepaste Taalkunde van de Erasmushogeschool 
Brussel over de articulatie van journalistieke 
identiteiten in de mainstream pers (in relatie 
tot berichtgeving over oorlog, multicultureel 
conflict en criminaliteitsberichtgeving). Als 
methode zal een combinatie van 
discourstheoretische analyse en discoursanalyse gebruikt worden.

In het kader van dit onderzoek wordt voor 30 
maanden een doctoraatsonderzoeker (bursaal) aangeworven.

Aanwervingscriteria zijn:

- een diploma hebben van:
licentiaat/master in de 
Communicatiewetenschappen, met een aantoonbare 
interesse in de (toegepaste) taalkunde;
of licentiaat/master in de (Toegepaste) Taal- en 
letterkunde, met een aantoonbare interesse in communicatiewetenschappen;
of licentiaat/master in een van de andere sociale 
wetenschappen met een aantoonbare interesse in de 
communicatiewetenschappen en de taalkunde.
Kandidaten dienen dit diploma verworven te hebben voor 1 oktober 2008.
- in aanmerking komen voor een doctoraatsbeurs(*)
- zich onderscheiden hebben in de opleiding

De bereidheid om een doctoraat over dit thema op 
te starten, en vertrouwdheid met kwalitatieve 
onderzoekstechnieken, discourstheorie en journalistiek strekt tot aanbeveling.
