Humanity(ies) in Times of AI

What challenges do the Digital Humanities pose to the human? This is a 
question that the Humanities – and not only the Digital Humanities – 
must urgently address in light of the successive challenges posed by 
generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and developments in computing. 
The Humanities face the need to define their own path and boundaries in 
a context where the limits between the human and technology are becoming 
increasingly blurred.

The history of humanity is also the result of the relationship between 
humans and technology. The previous issue of Biblos (2024) addressed 
these questions through the theme of Mediations. The next issue will 
focus specifically on technology and AI as its central theme.

This issue aims to critically reflect on the challenges AI poses to 
Humanity and to the Humanities in the university context, including 
topics such as autonomy, self-realisation, free will, privacy, freedom, 
originality, authorship, research, labour, creativity, and sociability, 
among others. These topics have aesthetic, ethical, social, political, 
economic, cultural and epistemological implications that require 
critical reflection.

Issue no. 12 of Biblos – Journal of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, 
University of Coimbra (2026) invites the submission of scientific 
articles that address the concepts of Humanity(ies), technology and AI, 
contributing to reflection on more just, participatory, inclusive and 
sustainable societies and political projects.

– AI, information management and cultural heritage
– AI and the new media ecosystem and public communication

AI Policies
– Privacy and data governance
– AI regulation
– Digital literacy in the context of AI
– Algorithms and democracy
– Labour and professions in the age of AI
– Inclusion and technological diversity

Geopolitics and territories of AI
– Geopolitics of networks and AI
– AI platforms and technological sovereignty
– Territorial planning and governance
– Territorial justice and algorithmic bias
– Smart mobility
– Public participation and territorial governance

Submission deadline: April 15, 2026.
