[Commlist] IAMCR Religion & Communication Working Group CfP for book collection
Wed Aug 20 07:47:54 GMT 2025
/*A CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS*/
The IAMCR Religion and Communication Working Group is pleased to
announce plans for a book collection on Sacred Shrines and the Media.
More people than ever before leave their home areas to visit sacred
places around the world. A burgeoning literature is beginning to explore
the significance of such touring, but the role of the media remains
largely unexplored. This lack of research exists even though media are
increasingly involved with travel to sacred sites. People learn more
about such sites, both before and after their travel (and sometimes by
virtual visits) through media technologies. Religious institutions
increasingly use media tools to enhance visitor experiences at the sites
themselves. And visitors use media in greater numbers to inform others
of and interpret their religious travel experiences.
Yet very little research on these issues exists. While scholars have had
much to say about how media and religion intersect and how religion and
tourism intersect, only a relatively few scattered articles discuss the
connection between all three. Grounded in the subdiscipline of media and
religion, this edited book aims to begin to fill this research gap by
centering the relationship between media, sacred place, and tourism.
While new/social media and traditional media (press, radio, tv) will
both be discussed throughout the book, it is possible to focus on one of
these.
Among projected chapters, will be those covering:
· Information in new media and traditional media about religious
pilgrimage sites
· Media images of sacred sites: content analysis of what is
written on religious websites
· Social media content about visitors’ experiences at religious
pilgrimage sites
· Effects of media coverage on images of sacred places,
including the impact and influence of media content in strengthening the
religious legitimacy of sites
· Role of the media during visits to religious sites and the
role of new media here
· Media-generated interest in religious sites
· Projection of religious sites through media channels
· Religious authority about religious sites challenged by media
content
· Media as a political tool within contests over sites holy to
more than one faith group
We invite media and communication researchers who are able to produce a
script of excellence including original research for a book geared for
the international academic market to write a 1 page outline, which
should be sent to: (prof.yoelcohen /at/ gmail.com). *The deadline for
submission is 15 September 2025.*
This will be the third book generated by the International Association
for Media and Communication Research working group on Religion &
Communication after the successful publication of Spiritual News:
Religion Reporting Around the World (Peter Lang Publishers, 2018) and
The Handbook of Religion & Communication (John Wiley, 2023).
Please let us know if you have any questions.
