*Call for Chapter Abstracts – ReFocus: The Films of Ryûsuke Hamaguchi
*
Edited by Yi Song and Zhaoyu Zhu
We are inviting abstracts for an edited volume on the cinema of Ryûsuke
Hamaguchi, to be published as part of the University of Edinburgh
Press’s ReFocus series.
As one of the most prominent contemporary Japanese filmmakers, Ryûsuke
Hamaguchi is known for his narrative restlessness and emotive subjects.
Since his first award-winning feature /Happy Hour/ (2015), Hamaguchi has
retained an attention to the delicate sphere of human relationships,
psychological complexity and emotional landscapes. Influenced by both
Japanese and global cinematic aesthetics, Hamaguchi experimentally
explores subjects of connections, loss and desire. While Hamaguchi
primarily portrays Japanese society, his works have achieved acclaim
from global audiences and won awards at film festivals worldwide.
The films of Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, however, remain largely underexamined in
critical scholarship, particularly in the English-speaking world. This
edited volume will serve as the first comprehensive anthology of Ryûsuke
Hamaguchi’s films, aiming to deepen the understanding of Hamaguchi’s
narratives, forms and social reflections in both a national and
international context.
We invite abstracts on, but not limited to, the following topics:
• Individual features and short films directed by Hamaguchi
• Aesthetics, performance and form in Hamaguchi’s films
• Authorship in Hamaguchi’s films
• Adaption in Hamaguchi’s cinema: Haruki Murakami, Anton Chekhov
and others
• Gender and sexuality in Hamaguchi’s films
• Eco-criticism in Hamaguchi’s works
• Global reception of Hamaguchi’s cinema
• Other topics related to Hamaguchi
