Humour as Research: Laughter, Knowledge and Cultural Critique

Humour is not just a subject of study; it is a vital mode of research. By leveraging laughter, irony, and absurdity, humour disrupts entrenched norms, reveals hidden dynamics, and invites fresh perspectives on culture, politics, and society. This panel examines how humour operates as research—actively shaping knowledge and understanding rather than merely reflecting it.

We invite contributions that explore humour as a mode of inquiry and a tool for critique. How does humour expose power structures or make space for alternative forms of knowledge? What does it mean to “research through humour,” and how do comedic practices like satire, stand-up, and memes perform intellectual and cultural work? From interrogating political absurdities to building community through shared laughter, humour opens new possibilities for understanding the complexities of contemporary life.

This panel encourages interdisciplinary and experimental approaches, inviting papers, performances, and creative presentations that engage humour as research. Scholars and performers are invited to share their insights, methods, and practices, blurring the lines between academia and performance. Together, we will reflect on humour’s potential to reshape how we think, feel, and know. Join us in a conversation that values both the critical and the comedic in expanding the boundaries of research.
