[Commlist] Capturing Conflict symposium

The Irish Film Institute and Maynooth University are co-hosting on June 24th 2022 the Capturing Conflict: The Irish War of Independence and Civil War on Film symposium and film screenings as part of the Decade of Centenaries national programme. We are accepting proposals for papers, screenings or panels up until 31st January 2022. Topics may include:

Films, newsreels, television programmes and other moving-image media about the War of Independence and the Civil War Approaches to issues of representation including political, feminist, postcolonial, cultural
Considerations of the production contexts of such media
Discussions of absences and omissions from film representations
Examinations of film’s role as document, art, myth-maker, or historical record – the problems with “truth” in historical adaptation
Fictional versus factual representations of history
Evolving perspectives from Irish Destiny (1926) to Michael Collins (1996)
Ireland’s history as narrative resource for international filmmakers
Indigenous correctives to foreign representations
Reflections on the distribution, exhibition and/or reception of such films by cinema companies, audiences, critics, etc.
Censorship or other screening restrictions of War of Independence films
Creative practice responses to such films
New perspectives on the role of media in the narrating of Irish histories of the fight for independence and the Civil War
