In this edition, Ventana IIIaims to continue developing a critical discussion about Latin America and its relation to the rest of the world. This year, the organisation committee proposes to focus on the Glocalto reflect on the tensions between the local and external agents in Latin America.

The adjective Glocalis a multivalent term which is observed in various disciplines, contexts and systems. It can be concisely defined as “thinking global acting local”. Glocalhas become a key concept usually employed by social sciences and humanities to think about the relation between the global and the local in a globalised world. Likewise, the Glocalis a fundamental notion for post-colonial theories so that its connection with Latin America is manifest and pertinent. For Diana Brydon, “the trend toward the local can represent a turn towards an intense engagement with the particular as retaining some autonomy from global currents, or it can mark a renewed awareness of how local and global are now intermeshed in ways we are still struggling to understand”.

We suggest two main approaches to this phenomenon. The first one refers to the various modes in which Latin American communities and individuals have reacted historically to globalisation’s external inputs from the conquest to the present. Thus, experiences of self-governance, women groups, social minorities, indigenous cooperatives, ecological and environmental groups, educational and artistic practise from non-European perspectives, and so forth, would be part of this approach.

The second perspective appeals to think of the future of Latin America. Jeremy Rifkin claims that as a consequence of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, globalisation has finished so that we must think in terms of glocalisation.Since the world is facing one of the most dramatic and radical challenges of history, we invite people to reflect on how Latin America will confront the globalisation crisis predicted by several thinkers for the upcoming years from local initiatives.
