*/British and Irish Radio in the 21st Century/*
The editors are seeking abstracts for papers that explore British and
Irish Radio in the 21st century. These may focus on any aspect of radio
broadcasting or alternative forms of audio content delivery. Proposals
are particularly welcome that focus on the civic, social and cultural
impacts and purposes of audio content delivery and radio broadcasting,
for example exploring minority audiences or the impacts of Covid-19.
Broadcast radio in the UK and Ireland has changed dramatically since the
beginning of the 21st century. Public service broadcasting is
experiencing increasing political pressure, whilst commercial radio in
the UK has continued to retreat from the provision of localised content.
Meanwhile community radio has arrived and evolved in the UK and has
continued to go from strength to strength in the Republic of Ireland.
In the 21st century there has been a rapid acceleration in the pace of
technological change in radio/audio production practices and the wider
delivery of curated audio. Although free-to-air “real-time” radio
continues to attract considerable audiences, it faces competition from
new audio delivery methods and increased competition for revenues. From
DAB and DAB+ to podcasting, streaming services and most recently smart
speakers, the ways in which audio content is consumed have diversified
significantly. Such developments raise issues around access, public
participation and diversity of involvement in broadcast content creation
and consumption.
We welcome contributions from academics, practitioners and
practice-based researchers. Joint proposals and proposals from emerging
scholars are encouraged. The maximum article length is 6,000 words and
we are also open to suggestions for shorter articles and items, such as
interviews and reviews.
The editors are operating to a tight deadline as this is a timely
opportunity to have a journal reflecting current concerns published in
calendar year 2021. **
In the first instance, abstracts of 250 words with a 100-word biography
should be sent to Dr Lawrie Hallett at the University of Bedfordshire,
(lawrie.hallett /at/ beds.ac.uk) no later than *Friday 5^th March 2021.*
Potential contributors will be contacted by *Friday 19^th March* and
required to submit the first version of their completed contributions,
in full, by*Friday 28^th May 2021*.
Dr Hallett may be contacted for further information:
