In 2021, the centenary of the education philosopher, communication
theorist, and public man, Paulo Freire, is being celebrated by thousands
of researchers and promoters of a transformative education, all over the
world.
For his universally recognized contribution, the scientific journal
Comunicação & Educação will publish the Dossier “100 years of Paulo
Freire”, a special edition, which should circulate at the end of this year.
Paulo Freire (1921-1997), born in Recife, Pernambuco, is the most cited
Brazilian intellectual reference all over the world. His extensive work
is marked by a deep commitment to an emancipatory philosophy of the
popular strata, through Education.
The Brazilian educator is also a fundamental reference for the theories
of communication in Latin America. This influence is recognized by
leading researchers in the area, notably in Latin American cultural
studies and community, popular and alternative communication. His
pedagogy based on practice and dialog has been applied to projects in
the countryside and in the city around the world.
Freire continues to inspire and guide the practice of liberating
pedagogy in various institutions and social movements, in formal and
informal education. His praxis in the communication and education
interface became the basis of thought that contributed to the emergence
and consolidation of educommunication, as a concept and practice.
In his lifetime, Paulo Freire obtained 29 titles of Doctor Honoris
Causa, between 1973 and 1996, in renowned universities in 11 countries
(Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, El Salvador, Spain, United States of America,
England, Italy, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland). After his death, he
became a central topic of studies and reference for projects by 32
organizations, in countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and
the Americas, identified as "Paulo Freire Institutes".
As of April 13, 2012, under Law No. 12,612, Paulo Freire is recognized
as a patron of Brazilian education. However, the figure of Freire is not
unanimous, in his own country. Traditionalist sectors try to
delegitimize the work of the educator, especially for its impact on the
formation of a youth increasingly committed to justice, the defense of
the environment and freedom of expression.
For these reasons, Comunicação & Educação considered it fair to give
space to specialists from around the world who have something to say
about the protagonism of Freiran thought in the transformation of
contemporary society, based on an educational project more committed to
the reality to be changed.
To lead the preparation of this special issue, professors Douglas
Kellner (UCLA, USA), Ismar de Oliveira Soares (ECA-USP, Brazil) and
Pablo Nabarrete Bastos (UFF, Brazil) were invited to coordinate the “100
years Dossier” Paulo Freire ".
