[ecrea] Contemporary Central and South-East European Cinema in Transition: A Postgraduate Symposium
Sat Jan 18 18:05:22 GMT 2014
Contemporary Central and South-East European Cinema in Transition: A
Postgraduate Symposium
University of Southampton, 23rd May 2014
Sponsored by Screen
Since the early 1990s, social and political changes have contributed to
industrial and aesthetic developments in cinema from these regions. This
period of transition has been characterised by uncertainty, bringing
unexpected opportunity to some but unforeseen hardship to others. Cinema
within the region has chronicled this transition on screen but also been
at its mercy as an industry.
This one- day event will bring together post-graduate research students
in the field of Central and South-East European cinema, providing a
forum for research exchange, making connections with others in the same
field and gaining expert insight.
The day will be split into thematically derived panels, punctuated by
informal socialising and concluding with a workshop on the practical
challenges facing researchers in the fields of Central and South East
European cinema, led by
Professor Ewa Mazierska (University of Central Lancashire, editor of the
journal Studies of Eastern European Cinema).
There is no participation fee for this event, however we do ask that you
register in advance. Likewise, we welcome attendance irrespective of
whether you wish to present a paper or not.
If you do wish to present, please submit a 300 word proposal for a 20
minute paper to (centralsoutheasteurofilmsoton /at/ gmail.com) by 25th March 2014.
Possible themes might include, but are not limited to:
- Everyday depictions of transitional societies
- Those who transition has left behind
- Nostalgia and memory
- Majorities and minorities
- Trauma and victimhood
- Industrial developments since 1990
- Privatisation and (declining) studios
- National cinemas and nationalism
- Aesthetic developments in New Europe
