Telematics and Informatics

CALL FOR PAPERS
The World Summit
on the Information Society (WSIS)
from an Asian-Pacific Region Perspective

Publication: Winter 2004

The First Phase of the WSIS, which culminated in the Summit Meeting in 
Geneva in
December 2003, has identified the key challenges facing the global 
information society. It
sees accelerating convergence between telecommunications, broadcasting 
multimedia
and information and communication technologies (ICTs) as driving new 
products and services,
as well as shaping the ways of conducting business and commerce.

At the same time, commercial, social and professional opportunities are 
exploding as new
markets open to competition and foreign investment and participation. 
Technology is
transforming modern world, as the industrial society that marked the 20th 
century rapidly
gives way to the information society of the 21st century. This dynamic 
process promises a
fundamental change in all aspects of our lives, including knowledge 
dissemination, social
interaction, economic and business practices, political engagement, media, 
education,
health, leisure and entertainment. Summit organisers concluded that "we are 
indeed in the
midst of a revolution, perhaps the greatest that humanity has ever 
experienced".

To benefit the world community, the successful and continued growth of this 
new dynamic
requires global discussion. This special issue would like to contribute to 
this disccusion
from an Asian-Pacic Region perspective. This means responding to the WSIS 
Plan of
Action and identifying how the Asia-Pacific Region should respond.
Both general and regional as well as local and case-based perspectives are 
wellcome.

Notification of acceptance: November 1 2004
