TOO MUCH NEWS. UNDERSTANDING NEWS SATURATION
New open access book by Hallvard Moe and Brita Ytre-Arne, 2026, Bristol University Press We are happy to announce the publication of our new book, /Too Much News. Understanding News Saturation/, which is now published open access by Bristol University Press. The book is freely available to read and download here https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/too-much-news This book explores the growing phenomenon of news saturation: why ordinary people, including regular news users, increasingly tune out, switch off and step back. Drawing on our long-term research into news experiences in everyday life, it reveals how information overload, doomscrolling and news fatigue are reshaping our relationship with media and democracy. News saturation is an individually assessed tipping point for no longer finding news valuable, for needing a break – at least for a while. In the book we outline this concept as a necessary intervention in debates on news avoidance. Based on our longitudinal qualitative research in Norway, and contextualized with findings from the Reuters Digital News Report, we unpack the various aspects of the digital media landscape that feel like “too much” for audiences: News is too intrusive, too trivial, too distressing, too uncertain, and too distant. The book provides essential insight on how audiences perceive news on difficult topics such as war and climate change, but also on how they relate to celebrity culture and to news in the attention economy. In the final chapter, we discuss what journalism can do to make news work better for people, and why news saturation is not the same as societal disengagement. The digital version is fully open access and can be downloaded, in full or chapter by chapter, from the publisher website. If you prefer a print copy, you can order it for GBP 29.99, and if you are quick, there is a temporary 50 percent discount code: CNF26.
