Fri Oct 23 17:22:59 GMT 2026

The Digital Technology for Democracy Lab (DTD) at the University of Virginia is pleased to share "Digital Democracy from Below: Resisting AI and Techno-solutionism," a new open-access collection of essays.

Bringing together researchers, activists, practitioners, and organizers, the collection examines how communities and institutional actors can challengeand reimaginethe growing influence of AI and digital technologies on democratic life. Across 34 essays, contributors explore questions of political power, technological infrastructure, digital sovereignty, accountability, environmental justice, and collective resistance.

Technological development is not treated as inevitable; the collection asks where democratic agency can be exercised, how existing power structures can be challenged, and what it means to practice democracy from belowin the digital age.

The essays are deliberately short and accessible, inviting readers from different backgrounds to engage with these questions and consider how they relate to their own work and communities.

The collection is co-edited by Jess Reia, Jonathan van Geuns, and Nicole West Bassoff.
