About the Book:
This volume offers a fresh and timely exploration of the intersections
between ecology, media, and culture in Asian contexts, foregrounding
audiovisual narratives and environmental themes embedded in the region’s
media practices. Moving beyond conventional approaches that privilege
purely aesthetic or socio-political frameworks, the book examines how
Asian media creators engage with history, globalisation, power, and
environmental crisis while articulating distinctive counter-narratives
that challenge Western-centric and orientalist perspectives.
Spanning a broad geographical and thematic scope—including Japan, Korea,
Thailand, Iran, Vietnam, China, and India—the collection brings together
ecocinema studies, environmental humanities, postcolonial theory, and
digital media studies. Combining theoretical interventions with rich
case studies across film, anime, video games, K-dramas, reality TV, and
VTuber performances, the volume centres Asian epistemologies to provide
a comprehensive mapping of contemporary Asian ecomedia.
