*SAS 2027 Animating Intelligence - Call For Papers*

The 38th Society of Animation Studies Annual conference will be hosted by Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh from 16th - 18th June 2027. The event will be in person only. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Society of Animation Studies, being founded by Maureen Furniss and Harvey Deneroff in 1987. SAS has legitimised the field of animation studies, creating its own canon of literature and making visible the magic of animation (academia). In honour of this anniversary, this year’s call for papers aims to celebrate the ever shifting metamorphosis of animation as a form and a field of study. Currently in the middle of a(nother) technological evolution how does animation as a medium evolve whilst maintaining the fundamental links with history internationally. In an era defined by advances in technology, what does the future of animation look like? What can we learn from the past and present? And how might the shifts in the field reshape approaches to the discipline?
Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  * AI: The impact of AI and animation practice
  * Small Nations: identity and nationhood
  * Dissemination through Technology
  * Future of animated storytelling
  * Gaming and animation
  * Animation applications in other industries (i.e. medical/science)
  * Music and Sound in/and Animation

    audiences etc.
  * Theories and methodologies in animation studies
  * Animation pedagogy – online learning applications; balance of theory
    and practice in curricula
