Disability Film Cultures – Call for Book Chapters

Edited by MaoHui Deng and Fraser Elliott

We are pleased to share this Call for Book Chapters for an upcoming edited collection on Disability Film Cultures. This call invites contributions across a broad understanding of disability and film cultures, and we are interested in the ways these two critical social concepts might intersect, overlap and/or diverge. In this collection, disability is understood through a social model, as that which is produced and performed by disabling surrounds, which might include – but not limited to – questions of accessibility, capitalism and market relations, and coloniality and decoloniality. We are eager to collect international and pluriversal perspectives on the various ways film and disability cultures discursively and materially intersect in the extra-film areas of production, distribution, exhibition, and reception.

We are seeking a combination of scholarly, industry and activist texts that might include critical analyses of disability film cultures, reflections on practice, and operational manifestos. Chapters will be 7,000 – 8,000 words, though shorter chapters will be accepted for manifestos and similar material. We proactively encourage contributions that are authored by and co-authored with people with lived experiences of disability. The book’s target readership would be for a general audience.

We welcome chapters exploring, but not limited to, the following themes:

  *

    Disability film cultures and value

  *

    Disability and useful cinema

  *

    Film exhibition and accessibility

  *

Approaches to disability in non-theatrical exhibition spaces

  *

Disability as a minoritised identity in film cultures

  *

The experience of disabled creatives in film and moving image production

  *

    Disability initiatives in film cultures

  *

Labour and disability in film cultures

  *

Envisioning a “disability film culture” beyond accessibility

  *

Decolonial and pluriversal understandings of disability film cultures

  *

Reflections on practice in disability film cultures

  *

Analysis of film cultures through a disability framework
