Vacancy: Postdoctoral Researcher – CLAIM Project (Climate Litigation 
Actions by the Internationally Marginalised) – UCLouvain, Belgium

The CLAIM project (Climate Litigation Actions by the Internationally 
Marginalised) is a Concerted Research Action (ARC, UCLouvain) situated 
at the intersection of law, political science, and communication 
studies. CLAIM analyses the role and practices of marginalised actors in 
international climate litigation, going beyond a purely legal-technical 
analysis to take into account power dynamics and the way discourses and 
practices are constructed before, during, and after cases. Communication 
and Media Studies scholars are welcome to apply.

*Recruitment*

The continuation of this research requires the recruitment, from 1 
January 2027 (exact starting date to be agreed with the selected 
candidate), of a postdoctoral researcher holding a PhD in information 
and communication sciences (or language sciences, or an equivalent 
field). The postdoctoral fellowship is awarded for one year, according 
to UCLouvain scales.

This call is particularly addressed to researchers in international 
mobility, who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, 
studies, etc.) in Belgium for more than 24 months during the three years 
preceding the start of the contract.

Main tasks

  * Within the CLAIM project, develop research activities analysing the
    communicational and discursive dimensions of international climate
    litigation. This will involve defining specific research strategies
    in collaboration with the CLAIM team; collecting corpora of
    publications and media/digital communication materials; applying
    appropriate analysis methods, including quantitative and/or
    qualitative analysis of discursive and multimodal materials; and,
    where relevant, conducting interviews and observation.
  * Contribute to the production of a database of international climate
    litigation cases, particularly those initiated by marginalised actors.
  * Produce scientific publications and communications in collaboration
    with the other CLAIM researchers.
  * Take part in the life of the research team.

Application requirements

  * PhD in information and communication sciences, language sciences, or
    an equivalent degree
  * Experience in processing large data corpora
  * Experience in online data extraction (social media in particular)
  * Interest in ecological, environmental, and climate litigation issues
  * Interest in decolonial issues and sensitivity to marginalised actors
  * Strong writing skills, openness to interdisciplinarity, availability
    and interest in training on relevant research software
  * Ability to work both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team
  * Fluency in English and French; knowledge of Spanish is an asset
  * Candidates must meet UCLouvain's conditions for the award of
    postdoctoral fellowships
  * Willingness to reside in Belgium for the duration of the fellowship

Financial and non-financial benefits: the position is a fully funded, 
one-year postdoctoral fellowship at UCLouvain rates, with integration 
into an international, interdisciplinary research team, opportunities 
for co-authored publications, and support for participation in 
project-related conferences and training.
