# Call for Submissions: Journal of Media Ethics

The Journal of Media Ethics has revised its aims and scope and welcomes submissions. Questions should be directed to the editor, Ryan Thomas ((ryan_thomas /at/ wsu.edu)). The journal does not require authors to pay to publish.

* * Aims & Scope

The Journal of Media Ethics publishes empirical studies and theoretical-philosophical essays on all matters pertaining to media ethics. The goal of the journal is to provide a forum for rigorous and theoretically informed analyses of issues relevant to the ethical conduct of media actors, whether at micro (e.g., individual, psychological, interpersonal), meso (e.g., organizational, communal), or macro (e.g., institutional, societal, international) levels.

The journal takes an expansive view of “media,” incorporating not just the traditional media professions of journalism, advertising, and public relations, and so on, but any personal or professional context involving mediated communication that raises ethical questions. These contexts include, for example, social media platforms, artificial intelligence, mobile media, popular culture and entertainment media, documentary filmmaking, corporate communications, political campaigns, propaganda, health communication, virtual reality, and partisan media.

The journal takes a similarly pluralistic approach to epistemology and methodology, maintaining that no single discipline, tradition, ethical perspective, or paradigm has a monopoly on well-conceived and
illuminating work.

* * What We Publish

The Journal of Media Ethics publishes a variety of types of original research, reflecting its commitment to both humanistic and social scientific modes of inquiry. All submissions are expected to have a strong foundation in ethics theories and concepts and must offer a clear theoretical contribution that advances knowledge in media ethics.

Published work generally falls into one of the below categories:

· Theoretical-philosophical research (i.e., “theoretical essays” that advance a theory-driven normative or philosophical argument).

· Quantitative empirical research (e.g., surveys, experiments, content analyses) that makes a theoretical contribution.

· Qualitative empirical research (e.g., observations/ethnographies, in-depth interviews, focus groups, textual analyses) that makes a theoretical contribution.

· Historical research that makes a theoretical contribution.

· Mixed- or multi-method empirical research (i.e., research that integrates two or more of the methods listed above) that makes a theoretical contribution.

Research makes a theoretical contribution when it advances, refines, or challenges existing theory by developing new concepts, distinctions, relationships, or explanatory accounts that deepen understanding of a phenomenon or problem. Such contributions may arise through empirical analysis (whether using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), historical inquiry, or philosophical argumentation. In all cases, the work must advance scholarly conversations on the topic or question at hand in a meaningful way, informing how scholars ought to understand, explain, or evaluate the issue at hand.

Topically and conceptually, the journal publishes scholarship on matters that include, but are not limited to:

· Ethical dilemmas and ethical decision-making by media professionals and other media actors.

· Organizational and institutional contexts that define, shape, and constrain ethical decision-making.

· Professional responsibility and accountability, including the systems, norms, and practices through which they are defined and evaluated across contexts.

· Moral development, moral reasoning, and the moral psychology of media actors.

· Global media ethics, including empirical comparative studies and theoretical work examining similarities and differences across global contexts.

· Ethical issues raised by media technologies.

· The historical development of ethics theory, ethics codes, and professional standards as they pertain to media fields.

· The intersection of media ethics and media law, including public policy and media governance issues that involve or raise ethical questions.

· Normative foundations of public and political discourse (e.g., civility, community, consensus, deliberation, disagreement, partisanship).

· Power, inequality, and justice in media ethics, including issues of race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, and marginalization in media practices and representations.

· Ethical dimensions of media production, labor, and precarity, including working conditions, professional autonomy, and responsibility within changing media industries.

· Platform governance and corporate responsibility, including the ethical implications of content moderation, algorithmic curation, and data practices.

· Media ethics in crisis, conflict, and risk contexts, including journalism and communication related to war, disaster, public health, and climate change.

· Ethical issues in visual, immersive, and emerging media forms, including photography, video, gaming, virtual reality, and synthetic or generative media.

· Issues related to the teaching of media ethics, as well as ethical questions arising in media education and professional training more broadly.

· Methodological and empirical approaches to studying media ethics.

· Theoretical, conceptual, and methodological connections between media ethics and the wider field of philosophy, including other areas of applied ethics (e.g., bioethics, business ethics, data ethics, medical ethics, research ethics).
