[Commlist] Postdoctoral Fellow, AI-enabled Scams as Systemic Security Challenge

Mon Jun 22 21:23:34 GMT 2026

Data & Society seeks a qualitative post-doctoral research fellow for AI-Enabled Scams as a Systemic Security Challenge, a two-year project housed under our AI & Democracy initiative and led by Director of Research Dr. Alice Marwick. The position is fully remote, begins September 2026, and runs through May 31, 2028.

This project examines how AI is supercharging scams and frauds, with a focus on young people's (Gen A/Z) susceptibility and how trust, legitimacy, and risk are constructed online. We are especially interested in youth financial cultures—cryptocurrency, MLMs, sports betting, memestocks, drop-shipping, "hustle and grind" culture—and how they reshape understandings of financial opportunity and risk. The fellow will conduct interviews and focus groups (with people harmed by AI-enabled scams, and youth in risky financial subcultures) and qualitative discourse/content analysis of scam materials. Roughly 30% of time is reserved for the fellow's own research agenda.

We welcome candidates with a PhD (completed before the start date) in communication, media studies, information studies, sociology, STS, anthropology, economic sociology, critical cybersecurity studies, youth studies, or a related field, with strong empirical qualitative training and experience recruiting study participants. Tech policy experience is a plus. Candidates must be living and authorized to work in the U.S.; we cannot sponsor visas.

Apply by July 15, 2026. Full posting and application instructions: https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/datasocietyresearchinstitute/jobs/8598064002 <https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/datasocietyresearchinstitute/jobs/8598064002>
