[Commlist] Funded PhD Opportunity at the University of Nottingham
Thu May 07 10:03:15 GMT 2026
An AHRC-funded PhD opportunity with the University of Nottingham and the
Museum of the Home:
*At Home and Out of the Closet: The Homemaking Strategies of Queer East
and Southeast Asian Communities in Contemporary Britain*
East and Southeast (ESEA) Asia is a region saturated by strong
traditional, heteronormative family values. In recent decades, many
LGBTQIA+ people have migrated from the region to the UK to study, work
and live in a queer-friendly environment. This project examines the
homemaking strategies of queer ESEA communities in contemporary Britain
at individual and community levels. It will shed light on the myriad
creative strategies ESEA communities use to create a sense of ‘home’ in
contemporary Britain where topics such as migration, LGBTQIA+ rights and
national identity are hotly debated.
This funded PhD project, a collaboration between The Museum of the Home
and the University of Nottingham, asks the following research questions:
1. How do people in the British LGBTQIA+ ESEA communities perceive ‘home’?
2. What creative and cultural strategies do they use to express their
sense of home in the UK?
3. What does this reveal about how ideas of identity, home and
migration are created and contested?
The candidate is encouraged to approach these questions from different
disciplinary and theoretical perspectives and anchor the research in
their own interests and experience. Home-making strategies may include
media and cultural production, community activism or everyday practice.
Research methods may include textual analysis, ethnography, material
culture or arts-based, creative methods. The research may include a
practice-based element such as creating a piece of literary or artwork,
or curating an exhibition or public programme.
The candidate will undertake a short-term internship at Museum of the
Home where their research will help build the museum’s ESEA collection.
