[Commlist] Hybrid Cities – The mediation of the urban experience. CALL
Tue Apr 28 07:35:25 GMT 2026
TECHNOLOGIES, MEDIAS, FILM & the CITY - Strand
A conference call on the future of life in TOWNS, CITIES, REGIONS
https://amps-research.com/dublin-technology-media/
University College Dublin
The history of cinema is rich in examples of film as a vehicle to
document, critique and explore the urban phenomenon, whether that be
life in cities, the construction of towns or the urban environment as a
backdrop or protagonist. While the city symphony is the most obvious
example, the history and present of filmmaking continues to demonstrate
a critical and insightful eye on the urban condition today.
Beyond film, gaming, video and animation all have their particular
perspectives and uses for the urban environment which, in an of itself,
is getting ever more cinematic – buildings facades display moving
imagery routinely and photogrammetry projects the ‘live’ image onto
architecture for example.
Beyond commercial media, the contemporary ‘smart city’ is now fully
intertwined with video surveillance, real time data analysis and
visualization at every level, turning the daily management of our cities
into simultaneous physical and automated processes of representation and
action. Often, this allows for multiple aspects of urban management to
coexist: early warning flood defences, community safety protocols,
emergency service notifications and building energy use, to name but a few.
-
Reflecting on this entwined relationship between technology, visual
media and the ‘city’, this strand call welcomes contributions from
filmmakers, artists, animators, digital technologists, urban planners
and more.
The aim is to get a better sense of the past, present and future of this
relationship and to encourage debate and knowledge sharing between the
various disciplines engaged in it, whether from the arts, design,
technology, planning or the social sciences.
