[Commlist] Call for Papers: The regulation of minority-language media

Sun Apr 26 10:52:19 GMT 2026

Call for Papers:
The regulation of minority-language media.
Concepts, case studies and critique
This edited volume aims to bring together conceptual and case study-based analyses of the regulation of minority language-media (including creative industries, broadcasting, film, and social media platforms, etc.).

Approaching media as a key instrument for promoting language revitalization and language use, reproducing cultural imaginaries, and strengthening local identities, the volume seeks to examine existing legal frameworks and identify -through diverse case studies- shortcomings of regulatory mechanisms intended to guarantee linguistic plurality in the media sector.

We invite chapter proposals that address the main theme from multiple perspectives (theoretical/conceptual, economic, social, sociolinguistic, media accessibility, etc.) as well as contributions that explore current legal challenges affecting minority-language media, such as financing, the impact of AI, geo-blocking, and streaming platforms.

Possible subtopics include, but are not limited to:

  *
the protection of minority-languages in and through the media
(international law, state regulation, regional frameworks)
  *
misinterpretations or inconsistent applications of legal standards
    in minority-language media contexts
  *
gaps between technological developments and the implementation of
    legal tools
  *
the production, financing, and distribution of media content in
    minority languages
  *
    media concentration, plurality, and transparency
  *
the role of public and private broadcasting in promoting
    minority-language media
  *
streaming platforms and the visibility and accessibility of
    minority-language content
  *
the function and effectiveness of monitoring and regulatory authorities
  *
social media, minority-language content, and related legal challenges

The volume aims to offer a comprehensive overview of the key legal tools for the protection of minority-language media, to analyse the causes of insufficient linguistic plurality in the sector, and to suggest avenues for improvement. *No payment from the authors* will be required. The editors are exploring the possibility of publishing the volume open access, through COST funding.

If you wish to submit a proposal, please, send a tentative chapter title and a short abstract to _plurilingmedia@gmail.com_ <mailto:(plurilingmedia /at/ gmail.com)> by 10th May 2026. Full chapters (7,000-8,000 words) will be expected by late 2026.
