*Position Description*
The University of Rochester’s Department of English, in concert with the
Film & Media Studies Program and the Art & Art History Department, seeks
a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor in film and media studies,
specializing in pre-1960 North American, British, and/or Anglophone
cinema within a global context. The teaching load is five courses per
year, plus some amount of service (including advising and mentoring
roles). Candidates must be able to teach historical-coverage courses
such as: “Film History: Early Cinema” and “Film History, 1929-1959";
other core courses in the film and media studies curriculum as needed
(e.g., “Introduction to the Art of Film” and/or “Introduction to Media
Studies”); and intermediate and advanced electives related to their
research expertise. Strengths in the study of other media—animation,
comics, gaming, television, radio, digital modes—are also welcome.

*Qualifications*
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Film Studies, Media Studies, English,
or a related field, by August 15, 2026; a scholarly record appropriate
to a visiting appointment at a research-intensive university; and
demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and CV, 1-2 writing samples (no
more than 40 total pages) representative of their scholarly work, a
teaching statement accompanied by 2 syllabi (at least one of which
should be a film history course in pre-1960 cinemas), and 3 letters of
recommendation, all by March 20, 2026. A statement describing how you
will add to the University's core values of Meliora (ever better),
discussing ways in which your experiences will shape your pursuits as a
member of our faculty, and sharing additional information you think is
relevant for the committee’s evaluation of your application.
