[Commlist] Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History | Michalsky Department Seminar Series: “The City Under Investigation”
Mon Feb 16 12:03:49 GMT 2026
|Dear all, I am pleased to share details of the upcoming film seminar
series organised by the Michalsky Department at the Bibliotheca
Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome.|
|/La città sotto inchiesta/ [The City Under Investigation] |
|In postwar Italy, the city became a contested and unstable object of
cinematic inquiry. From the mid-1950s onward, filmmakers and television
producers turned to Italian urban spaces, using shifts in scale,
fragmentary editing, and mobile viewpoints to interrogate the
relationship between social life and the contemporary spatial
transformations. The seminar series approaches the “filmed inquiry” as a
critical film practice that links aesthetic forms to political urgency,
focusing in particular on the housing question as a defining issue of
the period.|
|The programme forms part of the Michalsky Department’s ongoing research
on /Cinematic Space
<https://www.biblhertz.it/en/dept-michalsky/italian-films>/, exploring
how film generates spatial imaginaries at the intersection of visuality,
mediality, and historical experience. The selected films are presented
as case studies within a structured research framework, examining how
the genre of the filmed inquiry articulated spatial conflicts
surrounding migration, planning, and housing in postwar Italy. The
screenings are integral to the seminar’s analytical methodology and
function as primary research materials for discussion and scholarly
investigation. The seminars are organised as evening screenings followed
by analysis and discussion sessions the following morning.|
