Conference on Emerging Technologies in Conflict and Peace
University of Nicosia, Cyprus
May 18 th - 19 th
Keynote Speaker: Benjamin Noys
In collaboration with the ECPR’s Critical Peace & Conflict Standing
Group, Digital Transitions & Society is organizing a two-day conference,
to be held on May 18th – 19th at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus. The
aim is to initiate a critically-oriented discussion that centers on the
intricate relationship between emerging technologies and the dynamics of
conflict and peace (broadly conceived).
The conference provides a forum to examine two overarching research
questions:
- How and to what extent does the application of novel technologies
enable conflict, to the detriment of peace, justice and democracy?
- How and to what extent can novel technologies be effectively employed
in the service of peace, justice and democracy?
To this end, the conference seeks to deduce empirical as well as
theoretical insights through a comparative approach that examines
diverse localities and dimensions of conflict. We invite scholars active
in the proposed line of research to submit a 250-word abstract to Dr.
Michaelangelo Anastasiou ((anastasiouma /at/ gmail.com)). Please include author
name(s), paper title, institutional affiliation(s) and full contact info
in your abstract submissions.
Areas of focus could include, but are not limited to:
- De-democratization, authoritarianism and (digital) states of exception
- Emerging technologies, ideology and conflict
- Emerging technologies and
post-capitalist/post-colonial/post-nationalist transitions
- Emerging technologies in diplomacy and/or warfare
- Digital borders and migration
- Algorithmic surveillance and spyware
- Algorithms, platform capital and social media
- Emerging technologies for peace, justice and equality
- Emerging technologies, political/party organization and resistance
The conference provides an inclusive, vibrant and critical space for
dialogue. We highly encourage junior and emerging, as well as
established scholars, from different fields, backgrounds and regions of
the world to participate.
Submission deadline: January 28th 2026.
Notifications of acceptance will be sent in early February.
The conference is funded by the ECPR’s Bonus Fund and is endorsed by the
Critical Peace & Conflict Standing Group.
