CfP Networks, Algorithms, Citizenship: Toward the Post-Digital European
Public Sphere
EXTENDED Deadline Dec 30th, 2025
CALL FOR PAPERS
We warmly invite you to submit your proposals for the special issue 2026
"Networks, Algorithms, Citizenship: Toward the Post-Digital European
Public Sphere" of the/De Europa - European and Global Studies Journal
/(University of Turin). Editor: Prof. Dr. Marinella Belluati.
The idea of a European public sphere as a shared space for democratic
debate and transnational public opinion formation has long been central
to academic and institutional debates. In a geopolitical, social and
technological context marked by rapid transformation, it is necessary to
revisit the conditions of its existence and sustainability,
reinterpreting Habermasian foundations in light of contemporary forms of
democratic participation and pervasive digitalisation. Today, two
interrelated dynamics are reshaping the European public sphere: the
digitalisation of public space, which has expanded channels of
expression while intensifying fragmentation, unequal access and
vulnerability to disinformation; and artificial intelligence, which
operates not merely as a technical tool but as an epistemic and
communicative infrastructure shaping cognitive, deliberative and
decision-making processes at the core of democratic
citizenship. Building upon this framework, the special issue welcomes
contributions on the following topics:
- artificial intelligence and public communication in Europe;
- disinformation and digital campaigns;
- digital access and communication inequalities;
- governance and regulation of European digital communication;
- deliberation and participation in digital spaces;
- artificial intelligence and information ecosystems;
- European elections and digital public spaces.
