[Commlist] Journal of Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television 45.4. published - special issue on ‘Reworking the Eastern European Past through Audiovisual Archival Practices’
Sat Dec 06 16:45:39 GMT 2025
Diana Popa, Lucia Szemetová & Anita Pluwak are pleased to announce the
publication of a new special issue of the Historical Journal of Film,
Radio and Television, titled 'Reworking the Eastern European Past
through Audiovisual Archival Practices'.
The collection brings together contributions that reconsider the role of
audiovisual archives in shaping cultural memory and historiography
across Eastern Europe. The articles discuss archiving as a dynamic and
contested process shaped by material fragility, individual agency and
institutional shortcomings. Together, they render visible the
semi-peripheral conditions, epistemic challenges and creative
interventions shaping the study of the region’s audiovisual heritage. We
are grateful to our contributors for their engaged and thoughtful work,
and to our colleagues and collaborators whose support made this issue
possible. This special issue represents a meaningful step toward
rethinking film and media history in Eastern Europe by foregrounding the
labour, subjectivities and material conditions that underpin archival
practice.
