Asian CCI Seminar: “Disseminating Chinese media products overseas” (Online)
The Asian CCI Seminar Series provides a platform for research
presentations and exchanges among academics working on diverse issues
related to cultural and creative industries in Asia. Each seminar
features emerging scholars who present their latest research projects
and findings. We plan to continue organising a series of seminars in the
coming years.
On 5 November, Dr Xiao Yang (University of Macau) will examine how
Chinese media content circulates and how cultural policies shape its
dissemination.

<Title>
Disseminating Chinese media products overseas: cultural policies, the
transition of media industries, and the role of platforms
<Abstract>
China has long sought to disseminate its media and cultural products
overseas. Over the past decades, we have witnessed shifts in state
strategies, policy adaptations, and the upgrade of China’s media
industries. This seminar situates the overseas distribution of Chinese
media products within a broader context of national economy and
politics, offering a critical examination of how China’s media
globalization intersects with the state’s soft power agendas, national
and international market forces, and digital platforms in recent years.
I will first talk about the transition of China’s cultural policies
coinciding with the state’s requirements from the 2000s to the 2020s.
This will be followed by a discussion of the Chinese media industry,
focusing on the screen industry and the way that policies and market
have shaped the industry’s development, such as technological upgrade
and platformatization trends. Specifically, I address three types of
media products that have been distributed overseas: films, television
dramas, and online short videos. Provisional case studies include /The
Wandering Earth/, /Empresses in the Palace/, /The Untamed/, /Love
between Fairy and Devil/, and Li Ziqi’s short videos. I contend that
while films and television dramas have originally relied on
government-dominated top-down distribution such as cooperation with
local channels, the recent rise of social media and streaming platforms,
including both Chinese and international platforms such as YouTube,
Netflix, iQIYI, WeTV, and TikTok, have enabled new ways of distribution
and a growing number of non-state actors. This shift brings both
opportunities and challenges for China’s media globalization.
