What Future for the Cinema of Small European Countries?
In collaboration with the European Project CresCine

The International Journal of Film and Media Arts (IJFMA) is pleased to 
announce an open call for submissions for its upcoming special issue 
(Vol. 10 No. 3, Dossier 2), dedicated to exploring the question: What 
Future for the Cinema of Small European Countries?

This is more than a rhetorical question—it reflects a pressing need to 
rethink the dynamics, opportunities, and challenges faced by small 
European film industries amid rapid technological disruption, global 
competition, and changing audience behaviours.

Topics of Interest Include (but are not limited to):
. Small Film Markets: specificities, comparisons, and data gaps
. Sustainability: resilient models, green practices, and cross-border 
cooperation
. Technology & Disruption: streaming, AI, digital production, and access
. Cultural Policy: balancing local and global participation
. Audience Engagement: evolving behaviours and access models
. Cinema & Identity: cultural narratives and linguistic diversity
. Film Economics: labour conditions, funding, and value chain transformation
. Methodology: interdisciplinary and innovative research methods

We welcome contributions from scholars, practitioners, and policymakers 
across fields such as film studies, cultural policy, sociology, media 
studies, and economics.

Important Dates
Full Paper Submission Deadline: 15th September 2025
Peer Review Feedback: October 2025
Final Revisions Due: November 2025
Publication Date: December 2025

Submission Guidelines
Please submit two Word documents (.doc):
Full Paper prepared for blind peer review (no identifying information).
Title Page with: Author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), ORCID (optional), 
Short bio (max. 50 words) per author, Acknowledgements (if needed).

Open Access – No Submission Fees
There are no fees for submission or processing. All papers will undergo 
double-blind peer review.

This special issue is produced in collaboration with the European 
Project CresCine (HORIZON-CL2-2022-HERITAGE-01), dedicated to 
strengthening the international competitiveness of small European film 
markets.
