IAMCR Pre-Conference: Emotions and Journalism in Today's Dynamic Communication Landscape

WHEN: 12 July 2025
WHERE: National University of Singapore, Singapore
DEADLINE: 14 April, 2025.

Aligned with the forthcoming Handbook of Journalism and Emotions: Theory, Production, Content and Responses (IAMCR/Wiley), this conference responds to the growing global interest among media professionals and scholars in the intersection of journalism and emotion. Both the handbook and the pre-conference highlight an expanding body of research spanning multiple disciplines, theoretical perspectives, and cultural contexts, emphasizing the central role emotions play in journalistic practice and audience engagement.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

- Journalists and emotional labor
- Audience’s emotional reactions to journalistic pieces
- Studies focusing on specific emotions—such as joy, fear, or anxiety—in relation to journalistic works
- New technologies and their impact on emotions
- Cross-cultural differences in the use and experience of emotions in journalism or journalistic content
- Emotional content in news and journalistic media
- Virtual agents and emotion delivery
- Emotional hype in the production and reception of news content
- Traumatic events and journalistic coverage
- Experiences of journalists in conflict environments
- Ethics of emotional appeal in journalism
- Sensationalism vs responsible reporting
- Affective polarization in news reporting
- Empathy and compassion in journalism
- Social media virality and emotional contagion
- Gendered dimensions of emotional labor in journalism
- Humor and satire in journalism
- Artificial intelligence and affective journalism
- Emotions in journalism education and training
- Emotions in specific fields of journalism such as sports or crime journalism - Emotions in specific forms of journalism such as social media, podcasts, etc.
- Emotional appeals in journalistic works.

The organizers especially encourage submissions from early career researchers and those based in Global South countries.

Abstracts of 300-500 words, excluding references, should be sent to Maria T. Soto-Sanfiel ((cnmmtss /at/ nus.edu.sg)) and Virpi Salojärvi ((virpi.salojarvi /at/ helsinki.fi)) following APA 7 format across the text and references. Include in your submission a short bio (max 100 words) of the authors.

Registration fee for the preconference is 100 SGD (75 USD or 71 euros), which will support organizational costs. Students and participants from low income countries might receive a fee grant or a reduced price based (50 SGD (37 USD or 35 euros).
