at Bournemouth University invites you to a one-day symposium:
“Participatory Media Research and Marginalised Voices”. Please join us
on *Thursday 22 May 2025 *for this hybrid event, hosted at BU’s Talbot
campus and online.
With a mix of roundtable discussion, interactive workshops, keynote,
screenings and seminars, the symposium will focus on the ways in which
we can use participatory media research methods to listen to, engage and
co-create with marginalised voices and in global contexts. Seminars and
workshops will focus on sharing ideas, good practice and building networks.
The keynote will be delivered by Pablo Martinez Zarate,

documentary maker and scholar, working in Mexico City. There will also
be screenings of films and creative artefacts created using
participatory research methods. *We welcome researchers, scholars and
practitioners, including ECRs and PGRs to this free event.*

Horizons of Possibility, Pablo Martinez Zarate: Professor at Universidad
Iberoamericana Mexico City and founder, IberoDocsLab.org, a platform for
critical innovation in documentary practice.(Hybrid)

*1445–1500*: CESJ launches its Media Impact Lab (Hybrid)
*1500-1630*: Breakout sessions:
1. Screenings and discussion (Hybrid): Curated and chaired by Dr
Samantha Iwowo Between borders and battlefields: cinematic narratives of
survival: This screening event brings together three films—Roman
Gerodimos' Stepped in Blood (2023), Samantha Iwowo's Paint Brush
(forthcoming), and Sue Sudbury and David Young's Last Days of the Bibby
Stockholm (2024) — each rendering a distinct yet interconnected
exploration of power, (transnational nuances of) marginalisation, and
intersectional identity.
2. Workshop 1: Grant bidding for participatory research or research on
marginalised voices
3. Workshop 2: Publishing for participatory research or research on
marginalised voices
