[Commlist] EOI – MyWorld Multisensory Storytelling Summit

Wed Jan 22 14:09:36 GMT 2025

Multisensory Storytelling Summit – 29th May 2025, The Sheds, 65 Avon St, Bristol

EOI – Deadline – 28th February 2025 – Submit via email: (tom.livingstone /at/ uwe.ac.uk)

Inviting EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST for participation in MyWorld’s Multisensory Storytelling Summit, a key event in the programme of research being carried out by UWE’s Professor Mandy Rose and Dr Tom Livingstone into the evolution of storytelling in an era of multi-modal technologies. With a focus on the paradigm shifting potential of digital technology’s address of multiple sensory modalities, MyWorld’s research in this area seeks to map the impact this technological shift is having on narrative forms and the role new story formats have in contemporary culture. A lot is at stake. We need stories commensurate to the times that we live in, in formats that work against the routinization of our attention. Where are they? How do they operate? What worlds might they describe? What futures might they make possible? What new forms of knowledge do they enable? And what form of criticism do they require?

This event will be a high-level networking and knowledge exchange event, centred on key innovations in multisensory storytelling practice and the implications this paradigm shift has for access and inclusion within the sector. We aim to: showcase innovative work, surface new research and industry needs, foster the emergence of new collaborations and bring MyWorld’s industry-academic network into dialogue with the broad inter-disciplinary field of research and activity engaging with the past, present and future multisensory storytelling.
EOI’s (250 words + short bio) are therefore sought for:
- Provocations: short-form presentation (PechaKucha / 5-min FlashTalks) that triangulate the techniques and technologies from multiple angles, interdisciplinary perspectives particularly welcome. - Experimental Demonstrations: Either of stories told through the senses, or of multisensory devices with un-tapped narrative utility.

- Speculations: short-form presentation (PechaKucha / 5-min FlashTalks) that consider the near and far futures of Multisensory Storytelling, from both technical and cultural perspectives.

From:
- Practitioners/Creatives working with multi-modal, multisensory or immersive technologies within the creative industries. - Technologists/developers/researchers engaged with multi-modal HCI and interested in exploring its narrative applications. - Academics/Researchers working in/with emerging media formats and/or exploring multisensory storytelling across humanities disciplines.
