ICA 2025 Preconference: “Artificial Intelligence in Journalism from a Global Perspective: Past, Present, and Future”

Over the past two decades, there has been a notable shift towards automation and data-driven news production processes in many countries worldwide, partially supported by artificial intelligence (AI). Given the rapid and far-reaching changes AI drives in journalism, there is an urgent need to understand its past, present, and future implications.

This preconference at the 2025 International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference aims to bring together scholars 1) to provide an opportunity for discussing the past, present, and future of AI in journalism and 2) to address the specific uses of (generative) AI in countries from the Global South and Asia, which have sometimes been late adopters of such technologies.

Conceptual and empirical submissions may focus on—but are not limited to—the following themes and perspectives:

* Historical trends in AI adoption in journalism

* Comparative analyses of AI use in journalism across different regions or countries

* The future of AI in shaping global journalism practices

* The role of automation and machine learning in contemporary newsrooms

* Generative AI and its impact on content creation and distribution

* Ethical considerations in AI-driven journalism

* The evolution of journalistic roles and skills in the AI age

* AI’s influence on public service media and local journalism

* The role of AI in news organizations’ data management policies

* Regulatory challenges and policy responses to AI in journalism

The preconference will be held as an off-site event at Metropolitan State University (MSU) Denver on Thursday, 12 June 2025. Speakers are expected to be present. Virtual presentations are not possible. The registration fee of $ 35 will include small snacks and refreshments on the day.

Abstracts should comprise no more than 500 words (references excluded) and are due 15 March 2025 at 23:59 (CET). Questions and submissions should be sent to (maximilian.eder /at/ ifkw.lmu.de) <mailto:(maximilian.eder /at/ ifkw.lmu.de)>.
