[Commlist] New Book: From the Tourist’s Gaze. Holiday Home Movies as Vernacular Sources for the Ecocritical Thought

Wed Aug 06 08:24:30 GMT 2025

Pietro Agnoletto is pleased to announce the publication of the new book, From the Tourist’s Gaze: Holiday Home Movies as Vernacular Sources for the Ecocritical Thought/.

*Summary*
The book bridges environmental humanities and amateur cinema studies, examining how tourists’ own visual representations—specifically home movies filmed by North-West Italian families during their holidays in the Ligurian Riviera between the 1950s and 1970s—depict and engage with tourism-induced environmental transformations. This period, marked by the Italian “economic miracle”, saw rapid changes in landscapes due to industrialization and mass tourism. Through an innovative methodological approach to archival research and visual analysis, the book proposes new digital tools for studying amateur films as historical sources. While grounded in a specific case study, its findings may be of interest to scholars in cultural geography, media and tourism studies, environmental humanities, and amateur cinema, as well as archivists working with home movie collections.
