[Commlist] chapters for a new volume on the films of Youssef Chahine

Fri Feb 14 05:37:21 GMT 2025

We are seeking proposals for chapters for a new volume on the films of Youssef Chahine, ideally for EUP’s /Refocus/ series.

One of the most celebrated and pioneering figures in Arab cinema, Youssef Chahine (b. Egypt 1926 - d. Egypt 2008) occupies a singular position in global film history. Known for his bold political commentary, deeply personal narratives, and stylistic innovations, Chahine’s films traverse genres, languages, and cultural contexts, marking him as a director whose oeuvre defies categorization. Across his career, Chahine explored themes of identity, social justice, colonialism, and exile while also engaging deeply with questions of cinematic form and aesthetics. His legacy, however, remains underexplored in Anglophone scholarship, despite the growing interest in Arab and postcolonial cinemas.

This proposed /Refocus/ volume aims to fill this gap by offering a comprehensive and critical examination of Chahine’s oeuvre and re-contextualizing his work. We welcome proposals for chapters offering fresh perspectives on all aspects of Chahine’s work and its legacy. These could include analyses of specific films, thematic explorations across his oeuvre, or examinations of his influence on other filmmakers and cultural movements.

We particularly welcome authors from the MENA region.  Contributors need not be Arab-language film specialists.

Topics of interest might include but are not limited to:

  * The Popular Cinema of Chahine’s films
  * Transnationalism in Chahine’s cinema
  * Music and genre in Chahine’s films
  * Chahine and the politics of Arab identity, nationalism, and pan-Arabism
  * Representations of gender, sexuality, and queerness in his films
  * The autobiographical dimensions of the /Alexandria Trilogy/ and beyond
  * Postcolonial critique and anti-imperialism in Chahine’s works
  * Reception of his work
  * Chahine’s relationship with religion, spirituality, and cultural
    pluralism
  * Film form and aesthetics: narrative structures, cinematography,
    editing, and performance
  * The legacy of Chahine in contemporary Arab and global cinema

Please send chapter proposals/abstracts of 250-400 words and a 100-word biography to the editors of the volume:

Dr. Gillian McIver ((gmciver /at/ workmail.com) <mailto:(gmciver /at/ workmail.com)>) and Dr. Samar Abdel-Rahman  ((samar.abdelrahman /at/ liverpool.ac.uk) <mailto:(samar.abdelrahman /at/ liverpool.ac.uk)>) by 1^st March 2025.

The final chapters should be 5,000- 6,000 written in English.
