Call for Abstracts/Papers
*European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters Conference: Translating
Culture*
12th – 14th September 2025 Lisbon, Portugal
Abstract submission deadline: 24/02/25
ANAPI-LG, National and Professional Association of Interpreting - Sign
Language, based in Portugal, is proud to host this year's conference of
the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (EFSLI) in Lisbon.
The conference will take place from 12th to 14th September 2025, on the
topic: Translating Culture
The scientific committee invites submissions for presentations that
explore the roles of sign language translators and interpreters,
emphasizing their linguistic and cultural mediation across diverse
fields and contexts.
We particularly welcome studies that delve into cultural considerations
and challenges in their practice.
Aspects can include but are not limited to:
*Ethical considerations: challenges, dilemmas, and decision-making
processes and models;
*Linguistic and cultural mediation in interpreting settings;
*Sign language translation/interpreting studies;
*Comparative translation studies;
*Sign language translation and interpretation training;
*Quality assessment and professional standards for sign language
interpreters/translators;
*Cultural mediation/cross-cultural communication;
*Cultural identity and interpreting/translation;
*Media and technology in interpreting/translation;
*Cultural implications in specialized fields and contexts: legal,
health, education, employment, etc.
*Sign language interpreting/translation in artistic and performance spaces;
*Work culture: mental and physical wellbeing, safety for sign language
professionals;
*Collaboration between hearing and Deaf sign language
interpreters/translators;
*Continuous professional development for sign language
interpreters/translators;
*Legal frameworks, regulation, and policies for sign language
interpreting/translation;
Note: ‘translators’ and ‘interpreters’ are inclusive terms referring to
professionals who are deaf, or hearing.
A Call for Papers in International Sign will be available on YouTube by
searching “abstractefsli2025”.
Any paper will be delivered at the conference as a plenary presentation
for 40 minutes (30 minutes presentation and 10 minutes questions and
answers).
Proposals should be submitted by 17:00 Western European Daylight Time
24th of February 2025 These should include:
*Application Form (with your picture)
*Biopic
*Abstract
Proposals received should be submitted in Portuguese or English in a
word document (max 250 words), or in Portuguese Sign language (LGP) or
International Sign (IS) through an .mp4 video (max 2 minutes) by email
to <sc.lisbon/at/efsli.org <http://efsli.org>> (videos can be sent via
platforms such as WeTransfer or similar services).
The selection criteria will be based on relevance, significance,
quality, originality, and clarity.
All abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee (SC):

Official notification of acceptance of proposals will be shared by 17th
of March 2025.
The Scientific Committee selection is final, and it is not possible to
appeal.
Selected presenters will be required to notify their acceptance by 4th
of April 2025.
To complete the process, presenters will have to register, at the early
bird price, by 14th of April 2025.
PowerPoint presentations (in written English) and any other preparation
material for the interpreters, in English or International Signs, must
be submitted no later than 1st of July 2025.
Full papers in English, ready for publication, to be included in the
EFLSI 2025 Conference Proceedings should be submitted by 30th November 2025.
Conference languages will be Portuguese Sign language (LGP),
International Sign (IS), Portuguese (PT), and English (EN).
All presenters who wish to use a different spoken or signed language
from those listed above, are kindly advised to bring their own interpreters.
Please let us know and we will put you in touch with the Interpreters’
Coordinator, so that they will receive preparation material.
