Decolonising filmic experience: workshop 2, decolonising film education
Wednesday 26th June, School of Creative Arts, University of Hertfordshire

EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR PRESENTATION SUBMISSIONS: DUE 31ST MAY 2024

James Harvey is writing to invite you to the second Decolonising Filmic Experience workshop, organised and hosted by the School of Creative Arts at University of Hertfordshire. Workshop 2 turns to the subject of decolonisation and film education, with a particular concern for notions of decentred learning and the interconnection between Film Studies and communities. While anti-colonial Film Studies can be traced to canonical works on Third Cinema in the 1980s (Gabriel, 1982; Burton, 1985; Pines and Willemen, 1989), decolonisation discourse is today providing important new frameworks to approach the social and political dimensions of film histories and futures.

This workshop includes a keynote presentation by Professor Lindiwe Dovey, whose work has been pathbreaking in this regard. Dovey is the Principal Investigator of the European Research Council project, "African Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies". Throughout her scholarly work, Dovey has combined in-depth research into the exhibition, circulation, and curation of film with reflections on her own experiences.

This is a free, in-person only workshop. It will take place at 10am-4pm on Wednesday 26th June 2024. If you are working in related areas of decolonial film education, whether in the fields of Film and Media Studies, or otherwise, I invite you to submit a 300-word proposal for a short presentation on related topics to (j.harvey4 /at/ herts.ac.uk). Please send your proposal by the new extended deadline of Friday 31st May 2024. If you have any questions regarding the mode or form of presentation, or about the workshop more generally, please do get in touch.

The event will take place at the College Lane campus in Hatfield. Directions to the campus can be found, here: https://www.herts.ac.uk/contact-us/where-to-find-us/college-lane-maps-and-directions
