The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Media Studies. We are particularly interested in candidates who could complement our existing faculty’s strengths by contributing expertise in either of the following two areas: 1) Ecomedia/Media and the Environment focusing on intersections between sustainability/climatejusticeandmediaindustries/cultures;2)MediaoftheGlobalSouth and/or Black, Indigenous, and/or Latinx Media, including, but not limited to, cinema, television, and emerging and streaming media. The appointment begins August 22, 2024 with a mandatory two-day orientation August 22 & 23, 2024.

TheDepartmentofVisualandMediaArts(VMA)isavibrantandengagedcommunityof artists, scholars, and professionals, with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 1700 undergraduate students, and more than 100 MFA graduate students. The Department offers general education courses in art history, a BA degree that includes tracks in either Media Studies or Media Production, a BFA in Media Production, an international BFA in Film Art with the Paris College of Art, a low-residency MFA in WritingforFilmandTelevision,andanMFAinFilmandMediaArt.VMAalsocontributes to several interdepartmental programs. These positions would also have the opportunity to work with the Social Impact Studios in the Engagement Lab and the Social Impact Design minor in the area of social and climate justice.

*Qualifications:***

Theidealcandidateswillbeactivemediastudiesscholarsanddedicatededucators each with (1) a record of recognized, innovative scholarly publication in either of thedesignated area of expertise listed above; (2) college-level teaching experience as instructor of record in courses focusing on media history, criticism, and/or theory; and (3) a Ph.D. in media studies, visual or cultural studies, or a related field expected in handbythetimeofappointment.Astrongcommitmentto undergraduateeducationina residential college environment is essential.


Responsibilities for both positions include teaching introductory, upper-level undergraduate, and graduate classes in media studies within the Department of Visual and Media Arts. Successful candidates will demonstrate an investment in teaching in our new Foundations program, which includes courses on Media Histories, Approaches to Media Studies, and Media Criticism and Theory, as well as in bringing their expertise to bear in curriculum development.


OthercoursestaughtwouldideallyservestudentsfromacrosstheCollegeinadditionto Visual and Media Arts majors. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, support for admissions, and serving on Department, School, and College committees. The Department seeks candidates who will contribute to the scope and excellence of a diverse academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to pursuing scholarship, teaching, and service.
