Introduction
In November 2021, UNESCO unanimously approved a document that outlines
recommendations for achieving open, universal, and equitable science. In
this regard, open science has been defined as an inclusive construct
that combines various movements and practices to make multilingual
scientific knowledge openly available, accessible, and reusable for
everyone. The aim is to enhance scientific collaboration, information
exchange for the benefit of science and society, and to open up the
processes of creating, evaluating, and communicating scientific
knowledge to actors beyond the traditional scientific community. These
objectives affect all scientific disciplines and are supported by the
following key pillars:
● Open scientific knowledge
● Open scientific infrastructure
● Open engagement of social actors
● Open dialogue with other knowledge systems
Open scientific knowledge is understood as a common good to which all
sectors of society should have access without discrimination. According
to UNESCO's definition, open scientific knowledge refers to open access
to scientific publications, research data, metadata, open educational
resources, open-source software and hardware, available in the public
domain or under open licenses that allow reuse.
In this special issue, we invite submissions addressing topics related
to open knowledge, considering the following key components on which
significant progress has been made, as well as other aspects to discuss
in light of the evolution of open science in recent years:
● Open access to scientific production: policies in favor of open access
● Diamond journals
● Preprints and overlay journals
● Open research data: management and preservation
● Open infrastructures and interoperability
● Models for evaluating scientific activity based on open science and
responsible metrics
● Training and skills in new careers related to science and data management
● National or institutional policies to promote, foster, and implement
open science in all its components
