Mon May 22 21:47:59 GMT 2023
Call for Chapter Proposals: Palgrave Handbook of Drag
Editors: Niall Brennan, Mayka Castellano and David Gudelunas
Popular and academic interest in drag has burgeoned since /RuPaul’s Drag
Race/ first aired on US cable television in 2009. Despite rapid and
recent growth of interest in drag within popular and academic landscapes
due to /Drag Race/, performing gendered roles other than performers’
self-identified gender has existed for centuries, if only by virtue of
women’s exclusion from the stage in many global historical and cultural
contexts. Moreover, both within and beyond the US, drag is politically
rooted in gay liberation movements, if only and more recently to have
become absorbed by commercial mainstream and social media channels and
platforms.
Most recently, drag artistry, culture and performance have taken center
stage in current social-political debates, namely, but not only, in
conservative swathes of the United States. From the gender-restricted
history and contemporary landscape of drag, to the politically-mobilized
and contested spaces of drag, to the ways that drag has become a global
media commodity, we, the editors of the /Palgrave Handbook of Drag/ see
a need to attempt to account for a comprehensive historical, political,
economic, social, cultural and technological landscape of drag.
We invite interest in contributing to the /Palgrave Handbook of Drag/
from scholars, performers, activists and commentators of/on drag. Areas
of considering the vast landscape of drag include, but are certainly not
limited to:
